Aqualia participates in a masterclass on innovative treatments

Last 19th of June, our coordinator Aqualia participated in a masterclass hosted by Aguas Residuales, a Spanish media specialised in wastewater management. Moderated by José Miguel del Arco, Founder and Director at Aguas Residuales,  the guests for the masterclass were Marta Elvira, Researcher at the Innovation department of Aqualia, and José Antonio Moraleda, Responsible of promotion of Innovation at Canal de Isabel II. They presented “Paradigm shift and an innovative solution for wastewater treatment of populations with less than 50.000 inhabitants”.

The goal of the masterclass was to present LIFE ZERO WASTE WATER, an EU-funded project that demonstrates a cost-effective solution to achieve a positive energy balance in wastewater treatment plants (WTTP). Firstly, José Antonio presented the LIFE ZERO WASTE project, emphasizing the importance of water treatment, and how water management needs to evolve to be climate neutral by 2045. He then introduced some of the benefits of the AnMBR (Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor), which has been implemented in a WWTP in Valdebebas (Madrid), and then  in El Bobar (Almería). Marta mentioned that the AnMBR has been tested as part of the REWAISE and the INFUSION projects and explained how this technology works and its benefits for the resource recovery process.

LIFE ZERO WASTE WATER optimises wastewater treatment by combining it with the treatment of organic fraction of municipal solid waste, enriching the energy production of the process. In the case of REWAISE, the AnMBR is optimized to maximize biogas production and quality, and to enable water reuse, as the water  passes through ultrafiltration membranes.

Both projects contribute to a more circular and water-smart cycle by implementing innovative solutions in urban areas . Watch the full masterclass in Spanish here. And, if you want to know more about the AnMBR process in El Bobar, we have a post on our website here.
